Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader is set to propose a filibuster in order to convince Senators Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., to amend Senate rules and hold a vote on the Democratic-led initiative to revamp the US electoral system, Fox News informed.
In addition to Manchin and Sinema, a united Republican opposition stands in the way of the Democrats’ quest to abolish the legislative filibuster, making it all but impossible to approve a reform in Senate rules that would allow the electoral reform bill to pass.
According to Fox News’s Chad Pergram, both Manchin and Sinema have fought their party’s push to abolish the filibuster in recent weeks and remain opposed to the plan to establish a talking filibuster.
Before the meeting, Manchin reiterated his opposition to modifying Senate rules, stating that he has not changed his opinion.
Manchin stated that many of his Democratic colleagues have changed their minds and that he respects that, adding that he still hasn’t changed his mind and that they should also respect that.
However, Schumer was critical of those who oppose the Democrats’ quest to change Senate rules and approve their election reform, noting that a talking filibuster would compel opponents to speak up on the Senate floor.
Schumer said that if Senate Republicans oppose the bill, they should come to the Senate floor and act to defend their voting rights opposition.
After Republicans have spoken out on their bill, Schumer said the Senate will move to adopt it with a majority vote.
