Number two Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, urged President Joe Biden not to rule out using nuclear action against Russia if it invades Ukraine.
Wicker appeared in an interview with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto to discuss Tuesday’s video call between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin, revolving around the tensions related to Ukraine amid claims of a “probable ” Russian invasion.
Voicing deep concerns over the alleged buildup of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, Biden made clear to Putin that the US and its allies would impose strong economic and other measures in case of eventual military escalation in Ukraine, but ruled out putting US boots on the ground in Ukraine.
Senator Wicker, however, does not rule out military action, emphasizing there are around 200 US National Guard troops already on the ground in Ukraine and expressed hope that Biden would adopt a more tough stance toward Moscow and keep all options open.
Using strong rhetoric, Wicker explained the potential military actions as US ships’ intervention in the Black Sea that would result in destruction of Russian military capability, not ruling out even first use nuclear action!
He strongly believes that a Russian invasion of democratic Ukraine would be a game-changer to a free Europe but would still prefer a diplomatic solution rather than the use of force against Russia.
In a message posted on the embassy’s Facebook site, the Russian Embassy responded to the “irresponsible” statements made by Sen. Wicker suggesting he should carefully read the joint statement of Biden and Putin dated June 16, 2021, which confirms the adherence of both the US and Russia to the principle that nuclear war should never be unleashed since there can be no winners in it.
The Embassy also stressed that it’s inappropriate for a US politician sitting in the legislature to speak frivolously about the use of nuclear weapons.
