Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States denounced the European explorers who have discovered the American continents in a speech on Tuesday at the 78th Annual Convention of the National Congress of American Indians, Fox News informed.
Harris said that since 1934, the US in October recognizes the trip of the European explorers who were the first ones to set foot on the American continent, adding that this is not the full story and has never been.
The Vice President said that the explorers started a devastation wave for the tribes that already lived there, with violence, spreading diseases, and stealing their land. Harris argued that this must not be forgotten and that as a nation America must do everything that can be done in order to address the impact of the shameful past on the Native communities that live today.
Vice President Harris also said that US President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda is set to have a very significant impact on the Indian Country.
Harris also mentioned that nowadays the Native Americans are more likely to be unemployed, live in poverty, and struggle to get healthcare and housing that is affordable.
She added that this constant inequity and injustice are not right and that the Covid-19 pandemic has made it even worse.
Kamala Harris also mentioned that the new $3.5 billion infrastructure legislation of President Biden will definitely help and address many of the issues that Native Americans are faced with.
