House and Senate Top Republicans urged President Joe Biden on Wednesday to impose second round of sanctions on the Russian Federation due to the fact that the country used chemical weapons on Alexei Navalny, Russian opposition leader, Fox News informed.
The letter penned by Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas and James Risch, a senator from Idaho coincided with the meeting of US President with the Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit in Geneva.
The Republicans said that according to the US law, the President is required to assure Congress that Russia is not using chemical weapons against its nationals anymore, and will refrain from further doing this by agreeing to certain inspections. If the country fails to oblige to this, a second round of sanctions should immediately be imposed.
President Joe Biden had a period of three months to address the letter to Congress or slap sanctions after Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State noted in March that Russian opposition leader Navalny was the target of chemical weapon.
