FBI and Capitol Hill police launched an investigation after a suspicious package was delivered to the home of U.S. Senator Rand Paul on Monday, Reuters reports.
Paul said in a tweet late on Monday that he take these threats immensely seriously, pointing that it is reprehensible that Twitter allows C-list celebrities to encourage violence against him as a repeated target of violence and against his family.
The suspicious package, according to Politico report, contained white powder as well as an image with a death threat.
The outside of the envelope shows a picture of a bruised and bandaged Paul with a gun to his head and a threat printed beneath it saying “I’ll finish what your neighbor started you motherf…” according to a copy of the image obtained by Fox News.
FBI spokesman told the media that their Louisville office is working with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and the Capitol Police by providing forensic and technical support.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office were contacted by the U.S. Capitol Police Monday afternoon regarding the package that was later transported for analysis to the Bowling Green Fire Department. They informed that the preliminary analysis showed that the substance inside it was non-toxic, but further analysis will be conducted on both the substance and package.
Authorities have not released yet a motive or the name of the sender in connection to the package.
