Maskless Selfie in Chamber Earns Six House Republicans $500 Fine

A group of six House GOPs has been fined $500 for defying insistence for members to keep their faces covered in the chamber except when speaking during debates, after previously ignored the letters of warning previously sent to them, according to New York Post.

Dozen or so Republican lawmakers went for mask-free presence during votes Tuesday, with some making a point to stand in the well of the House chamber to ensure that the C-SPAN cameras could not miss them. On top of that, the video shows them taking a group selfie.

The House of Representatives previously rejected a move by Republicans to relax guidelines on the wearing of masks in the chamber, with Democrats arguing that if lawmakers want to be maskless they need to be vaccinated.

Trying to explain their actions, the GOPs cited most recent CDC guidance that says people fully vaccinated could forgo masks in all public buildings last week across the country. The Washington Post also said Republicans boasted about the fines.

One of the GOPs on the selfie, Taylor Greene, went even longer distance by posting a video in which she ran the letter of warning through an office shredder, saying that one can’t discriminate against people simply because they won’t wear a mask.
