Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State and Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Policy Minister discussed the areas in which Washington and Moscow can work together, despite some huge differences. The meeting was the first between the two countries since the President Joe Biden assumed his presidential position, CNBC reported.
The meeting was held on Wednesday right after the Arctic Council talks in Iceland and lasted about 90 minutes. According to a senior official of the State Department the discussion was businesslike and productive.
The Secretary of State Blinken praised Lavrov for meeting and offered sections where the two countries can boost their cooperation.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, told the journalists on the phone that the discussion between the two countries was constructive, but underlined that many problems have piled up between Moscow and Washington.
The spokesman also stated that the Kremlin has not made a decision on a possible summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden. During a phone call with Putin, the US President gave a proposal for both presidents to meet somewhere outside of Russia and US.
