The Biden administration has reached no decisions after weighing on changes to travel restrictions that prevent most of the world’s population from coming to the United States after EU decided on Wednesday to open doors to vaccinated Americans, Reuters reports.
U.S. agencies have been holding meetings for more than a month and consulting industry officials about the possibility to unwind the travel restrictions first imposed in response to Covid-19. United States has barred nearly all non-U.S. citizens who have recently been in the UK, large part of Europe, China, Iran and Brazil in early 2020, adding South Africa and India to the list this year.
White House spokesman said there are no changes planned in travel restrictions at the moment that would allow vaccinated Europeans to enter U.S. considering also that CDC and the U.S State Department still recommend against nonessential travel.
A coalition of U.S. and European travel, airline, union, business and airport groups has called for a full reopening of the U.S.-UK air travel market as soon as safely possible, but U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that any decision to lift restrictions “is an interagency process and obviously the CDC is taking a leading role”.
