Pittsburgh Could Get First Black Mayor after Peduto Concedes Primary Election

Incumbent Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto ended his bid for a third term Tuesday night, conceding the primary election to challenger Ed Gainey, who could become the city’s first Black mayor if he wins the general election in November, Politico reports.

Peduto, who has been seeking a third term against three primary challengers, announced his decision on Twitter saying that he called Gainey to congratulate him on earning the Democratic endorsement for Mayor of the city of Pittsburgh, and thanked the city of Pittsburgh for the honor of being its Mayor these past 8 years.

Gainey, a five-term state representative, runs his campaign promoting progressive policies like demilitarizing the police, workers’ right to unionize, equality for Black and poor residents and calling Pittsburgh a tale of two cities and seems quite confident he’ll win, considering his current lead with 46.25%.

He pointed Tuesday night that one person can’t change a city because a city is changed with all of us and said he’s running for mayor because he believes that we can have a city for all.
