China Wants to Build Atlantic Naval Base in Africa, US General Warns

US and China will meet for the first time at a high level since Russia's attack on Ukraine as Biden tries to get Beijing's help with the war.

According to a top US general for Africa, the rising threat from China can come from Pacific, but also the Atlantic, Fox News informed.

Stephen Townsend, a US General, gave an interview for AP, saying that China wants to build a very big navy port so it can host aircraft carriers or submarines on the western coast of Africa. He stated that Beijing has made an approach to states from Mauritania to south Namibia, which is seen as an intent for starting a naval facility. If the country completes this project, China would be able to base warships in the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.

The warning of Gen. Townsend arrive as the Pentagon is changing its focus, from the counter-terrorism wars, to the Indo-Pacific area and the threats from powers like Russia and China. Biden’s administration sees China’s expanding influence on global economy and military as US’s security challenge.

Many military commanders from the US, also warn that China’s rising assertiveness is not just occurring on the Asian continent, adding that Beijing is influencing countries in the Middle East, Africa and South America.
