Las Vegas police authorities issued a warrant for soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo’s DNA as part of an ongoing investigation into rape allegations against him.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the DNA test is connected to an investigation into allegations by Kathryn Mayorga that Ronaldo raped her in his Las Vegas hotel room in 2009. Mayorga filed a lawsuit last October alleging that Ronaldo paid her $375,000 as part of a confidentiality agreement about the incident.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Las Vegas police found DNA other than Mayorga’s on the dress she was wearing the night of the alleged incident. Police are gathering evidence before handing the case over to the district attorney’s office, the news outlet said.
There is no statute of limitations in Nevada to bring charges, The Journal reported.
An attorney for Ronaldo said in a statement to The Journal on Thursday that the encounter between the athlete and Mayorga was “consensual in nature,” and argued it would not be surprising that “DNA would be present” as a result.
Ronaldo previously dismissed the allegation as “fake news” in a video posted to Instagram.
