Fifty days before the November 6 midterm elections, Democrats have increased their chances of retaking the House and winning back the Senate.

The main reason are the latest bad headlines which have proven detrimental to President Donald Trump, whose approval rating has taken a fall as a result. The GOP has likewise been affected by such developments.

Former campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s decision Friday to plead guilty and cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller was the latest in the series of bad news for Trump and a potentially pivotal moment in the Mueller probe as it offers insight into a June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower with Russian figures.

Manafort was one of three key Trump associates who participated in that meeting, The Hill writes.

Republicans are nonetheless confident the growing economy will help them retain majority in the House where Democrats need 23 seats to take it back.

“I think we’ll lose some seats, but I think we keep the majority,” Representative Roger Williams said last week.

However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has acknowledged the fact that this is a turbulent period for the GOP, warning that the midterms will be “very challenging” for the party.

Less than two months out from the midterms Republicans face competitive battles in Tennessee, Arizona and Texas. In the House, 11 GOP seats are considered “likely” or “leaning Democrat” by the Cook Political Report.

As a result, Democrats have expressed confidence regarding the upcoming midterm elections.

“The mood is: we wish the elections were Tuesday,” said Democratic Representative Dan Kildee. “The Republicans are in political quicksand, and the more they struggle the harder it is for them.”

Republicans fear that if Democrats take over the House, they would immediately impeach President Trump.
