Trump Silent in Public, Angry in Private Over Midterm Results

Former president Donald Trump is not known for his silence. But the typically loud and voluble former president appeared uneasy at his election night event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The midterms were expected to be a moment of triumph for Trump. But it did not quite turn out that way.

Trump appeared uneasy about the underwhelming Republican performance in the midterms at an election watch party he hosted at his Florida resort Tuesday night after it was clear there would be no “red wave” that he had implored his supporters to deliver.

According to Trump’s advisers, the former president did not take the blow well. Advisers and people close to Trump said while he was quiet in public, behind closed doors he was explosive in anger. Trump was livid, “screaming at everyone” after the midterm results came in, advisers said.

The election night gathering was organized in the large ballroom at his Florida property Mar-a-Lago, recently famous for being raided by the FBI.  The often talkative Trump seemed particularly uninterested in addressing guests or even speaking to reporters after he delivered a short and solitary speech.

It comes as Trump is expected to announce his third campaign for the White House next week.

The midterms are an obvious disappointment to Trump. The former president had anticipated strengthening his position as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination by delivering wins for candidates he endorsed, but the results in the most competitive contests were decidedly mixed.

Trump is being labeled as the “biggest loser” of the 2022 midterms. The former president backed a slew of losing candidates, while his main rival trounced the field.

The close races for Trump-endorsed candidates appeared to confound the former president, whose only formal remarks came early in the evening when he delivered a clipped speech in his ornate white-and-gold ballroom.

But in an indication of his unease, Trump simply said it had been an “interesting evening” before praising the Republican Senate candidate Katie Britt, whose win in Alabama was considered a foregone conclusion.

Trump was silent about the Florida governor – and his potential 2024 presidential rival – Ron DeSantis’s sweeping re-election.
