Trump Threatens Rouhani on Twitter, Says Iran Will Suffer ‘Severe Consequences’

President Donald Trump threatened Iran late Sunday, warning Tehran with severe “consequences”. On Sunday Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that should the U.S. engage in a conflict with his country, that war would be “the mother of all wars”.

“NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!” Trump responded to Rouhani on Sunday.

After reports from global media outlets that the Trump administration reportedly launched an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to pressure Tehran to end its nuclear program and its support of militant groups, Rouhani warned the U.S. leader over pursuing hostile policies against his country.

“Mr. Trump, don’t play with the lion’s tail, this would only lead to regret. America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars,” Rouhani said, addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats.

Rouhani’s comments were also endorsed by Iran’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who praised the Iranian President’s remarks, calling them “a policy and attitude by the system.”

The New York Times notes that with the withdrawal from the nuclear deal, the United States resumed tough sanctions on Iran – with the country’s economy already in trouble, with its currency, the rial, dropping sharply in value against the dollar and a record amount of capital being taken out of the country last year.
