Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni commented on President Donald Trump’s remarks toward African nations praising Trump for his frankness and honesty.
The Hill reports that Uganda’s president said during the opening of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in the Ugandan capital of Kampala that “America has got one of the best presidents ever, I love Trump because he tells Africans frankly. The Africans need to solve their problems, the Africans are weak.”
Museveni’s statement comes after Trump referred to African nations as “shithole countries” during a White House meeting on immigration this month, according to several participants. The president, besides denying that he said those words, also denied the allegations that he is racist. However Presi, ent Trump acknowledged that he used tough language during the meeting.
After The Washington Post reported about Trump’s comments, leaders around the world criticized Trump for his remarks.
French President Emanuel Macron said “It’s not a word you can use. And if we want, precisely, to build peace, development in these countries and a respectful relationship, you can’t use those words by definition.”
South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) didn’t specifically mention the vulgarity but said it was concerned about “statements that were allegedly made by President Donald Trump” concerning African nations. DIRCO noted South Africa’s contributions to the United States and said international reactions “clearly serve as a united affirmation of the dignity of the people of Africa and the African diaspora.”
The US Embassy and its top diplomat responded by saying, “there has been no change in the United States’ dedication to our partners across the Continent” and that “the United States deeply respects the people of Africa and South Africa,” according to the DIRCO statement.
Meanwhile, the African Union demanded an apology be made by Trump over his remarks.
