Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer received another batch of bad news after President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that no agreement to help Dreamers will be reached if there is no funding for his promised border wall along the Mexico border.
“Cryin’ Chuck Schumer fully understands, especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no Wall, there is no DACA. We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!” the president wrote on Twitter.
By Dreamers, the president was referring to the thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children and are now protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA has been established by the Obama administration and in some way gives Dreamers legal documents to work and live in the country.
The three-day government shutdown was a result of Democrats trying to get DACA funding after the President terminated the program in September. Democrats, in the end, backed down after Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, promised that he would hold a debate on the issue in February.
That means that there is no promise that a solution will be voted, but in case a DACA funding bill passes Senate there is no chance it will get through the House, and now it’s confirmed that the president will veto if there is no funding for the wall.
According to The Hill, Schumer came under fire from the left-wing faction of his party for supposedly caving to the GOP over the DACA issue. The Senate minority leader said he had discussed funding for a border wall at the White House on Friday as part of a potential deal.
However, Schumer confirmed he had withdrawn the offer Tuesday night.
“We’re going to have to start on a new basis and the wall offer is off the table,” Schumer said.
