Richard Gates had no other choice but to hire a top white-collar attorney regarding the charges received in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections. His new lawyer Tom Green has been spotted twice by CNN reporters at Mueller’s office.
Gates is a former business associate of Paul Manafort who was the head of President Donald Trump’s election campaign. He was charged eight times in October by Mueller including for money laundering. He pleaded not guilty on all of the charges. Manafort also pleaded not guilty to 9 charges in the same case.
According to CNN, Green was seen at Mueller’s office two times last week, suggesting that Gates might be in negotiations with the special counsel. Also, Green is not listed as an attorney for Gates in the court records, and works for a law firm different from that of the rest of the lawyers on Gates’ team. Green declined to comment as did Gates’ primary lawyers, citing the gag order on the case.
Both The Hill and CNN reached out to the special counsel’s office for any comments but the spokesperson declined to reveal any information.
The Hill reported that Mueller has filed charges against four figures tied to President Trump in his probe. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign staffer George Papadopoulos have both pleaded guilty to charges from Mueller. And that both men are cooperating with the special counsel’s office, and could be joined by Gates if he decides to strike a deal with the special counsel.
Last month Gate’s attorney Walter Mack said in court that the federal prosecutors warned him that they have more charges against Gates and will file them if he does not cooperate.
