Trump Praises Kelly After Reports of In-House Tensions

President Donald Trump gave his support on Tuesday to White House chief of staff John Kelly, saying that he is doing a fantastic job. Kelly previously was largely criticized for his handling of the government shutdown negotiations.

“Thank you to General John Kelly, who is doing a fantastic job, and all of the Staff and others in the White House, for a job well done,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“Long hours and Fake reporting makes your job more difficult, but it is always great to WIN, and few have won more than us!”  Trump later added.

On Monday Vanity Fair published that the relationship between Trump and Kelly “may finally have gone past the point of no return.” Vanity Fair also added that the president’s daughter, Ivanka, is helping the search for a suitable replacement for Kelly.

Kelly’s efforts were endorsed by the president shortly after Trump signed the stopgap spending bill that ended the government shutdown. Kelly, who is a retired Marine Corps general, faced negative comments from members of Congress regarding his role in the negotiation between the two parties.

According to The Hill, Democrats and some Republicans say he shares blame for scuttling a bipartisan deal that would have offered legal protections for young immigrants living illegally in the U.S. in exchange for billions of dollars in border-security measures.

Previously, Kelly made the president angry when he said to a group of Hispanic lawmakers that Trump’s campaign promise to build a wall along the entire length of the U.S.-Mexico border was “uninformed.”

During an interview last week on Fox News, Kelly took credit for helping Trump evolve on the issue of immigration.

“Campaigning and governing are two different things and this president has been very, very flexible in terms of what is within the realm of the possible,” Kelly said.
