President Donald Trump commented on the recent development between the FBI and lawmakers probing if the bureau was biased or not during its investigation into Clinton’s use of private email server as well as Trump’s alleged collaboration with Russia.
Last week, the FBI notified the members of the committee that due to a software error it was not able to preserve five months worth of text messages exchanged by two agents active in the investigation.
Trump twitted on Tuesday that this is “one of the biggest stories in a long time.”
“In one of the biggest stories in a long time, the FBI now says it is missing five months worth of lovers Strzok-Page texts, perhaps 50,000, and all in prime time. Wow!” he wrote.
The lost messages were exchanged between agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page. The FBI said that the lost data is between December 14, 2016, and May 17, 2017, and that this was a result of issues with many of the mobile phones given to agents.
According to The Hill, Strzok, who also worked on the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, was removed last summer from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia after it was discovered he and Page exchanged anti-Trump messages.
Congressional Republicans have been focusing on Strzok and Page in recent weeks after learning the two had exchanged anti-Trump text messages on their work-issued cell phones. Republicans have said the texts, which referred to Trump as an “idiot” and a “loathsome human,” raised concerns the FBI is biased against Trump and may have given Clinton favorable treatment by deciding not to recommend criminal charges regarding the investigation into her use of a private email system while she was secretary of state.
On Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that the Justice Department will investigate the missing messages.
