Republican Lawmaker Calls for Mueller to Resign

A conservative House Republican is calling for Robert Mueller to resign as special counsel overseeing the FBI investigation of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

In the resolution he issued on Friday, Matt Gaetz claims Mueller is compromised because at the the time when the Obama administration allowed a Russian company to buy a Canadian mine with uranium reserves, Mueller served as FBI director.

“These deeply troubling events took place when Mr. Mueller was the Director of the FBI. As such, his impartiality is hopelessly compromised. He must step down immediately,” Gaetz said.

Both Representatives Andy Biggs and Louie Gohmert, members of the House Freedom Caucus cosponsored the resolution. Gaetz’s resolution comes only days after the special counsel’s team revealed the first indictments of the Russia investigation.

Both Paul Manafort and his former business partner, Richard Gates were charged this week with money laundering in an attempt to hide payments for work they carried out for a Ukrainian pro-Russia political party.

Last week, Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee announced they will investigate the 2010 sale which took place when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, though there is little evidence she was involved in approving it. The FBI has, however, found evidence that Russian nuclear industry officials were engaged in bribery and money laundering in order to enter U.S. energy market.

A former FBI informant was recently released by the Justice Department so that he can give a testimony before Congress as to what he knows about Russia’s attempts to expand its energy business in the U.S.
