Academic Suspected of Being Middleman in Russia’s Election Interference

A London-based academic, Joseph Mifsud, is suspected of being the link between Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos and the Russian government. The CNN reports that he had told a business contact that the Russians had accumulated a significant amount of information about Hilary Clinton long before the information became public.

Mifsud reportedly also bragged about his connections with Moscow and the fact that he had dinner with the Russian president. He matches the “Foreign Contact 1” profile. According to court documents, Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty on Monday about giving the FBI false information, had several meetings with “Foreign Contact 1.”

However, Mifsud claimed the allegations against him were false and said he had “a clear conscience.” The business contact, on the other hand, told CNN that Mifsud had claimed “these guys (Russia) have a whole bunch of stuff on Clinton.”

The unsealed court documents also show that the Foreign Contact 1 had similarly told Papadopoulos the Russians had “dirt” on Clinton, and “thousands of emails.” Mifsud is described as a London-based professor of diplomacy who comes from a Mediterranean country, which matches the “professor” figure in Papadopoulos’ FBI affidavit. He is indeed from Malta and is the director of the London Academy of Diplomacy, as well as a former honorary professor at the University of East Anglia. He was also described by the business contact as “pro-Russian.”
