John Kelly: Cuba ‘Could Stop Attacks’ on American Diplomats

The Cuban government could stop the attacks on U.S. diplomats after a group of Americans there, experienced severe hearing loss, dizziness and other cognitive issues, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly said.

During a press briefing held on Thursday, Kelly was asked whether official Havana was responsible for the incidents.

“We believe the government could stop the attacks on our diplomats,” Kelly said.

He did not respond to the questions whether President Donald Trump would close the embassy in Cuba. Earlier, the U.S. government withdrew its staff from Cuba. An official from the State Department at the time said that the move is not a signal for change of policy or determination of responsibility for the attacks and added that the diplomatic relations between the countries will be maintained.

“The decision on expulsions was taken due to Cuba’s inability to protect our diplomats in Havana as well as to ensure equity in the impact on our respective operations,” the official said.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press obtained a recording of what some of the Americans working in the U.S. Embassy in Havana have heard and released it on Thursday. According to AP, the recordings are sent for analysis to the U.S. Navy which has advanced capabilities for analyzing acoustic signals. The recordings have also been sent to the intelligence services.

Not all U.S. diplomats who were injured heard sounds, but it is not clear if those who did hear sounds, heard the same thing.
