One of President Donald Trump’s attorneys on Sunday said that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility the President would fire the special counsel appointed to look into his campaign’s potential ties to Russia, Politico reports.
Robert Mueller was appointed by theJustice Department last month to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, and on Sunday ABC asked Trump attorney Jay Sekulow whether the President would pledge not to interfere or order the attorney general to fire Mueller.
“Look, the President of the United States, as we all know, is a unitary executive. But the President is going to seek the advice of his counsel and inside the government as well as outside. And I’m not going to speculate on what he will, or will not, do”, Sekulow said for ABC’s “This Week”.
Sekulow said he “can’t imagine” the issue would arise, but “that, again, is an issue that the President with his advisers would discuss if there was a basis.”
Democrat SenatorJack Reed on Sunday, commenting Mueller’s investigation, urged that Trump be deposed as part of Mueller’s investigation into any ties Trump’s campaign had with Russia.
“I think he has to come to the President with a list of questions that only the President can answer. The President should answer truthfully, under oath, those questions”, Reed said about Mueller’s investigation on “Fox News Sunday.”
The Rhode Island Senator is a top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee and a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign. On Friday, Trump vowed “100 percent” to answer under oath any questions from the special counsel.
