Former FBI Director Awaits New Probe over Leaked Memos

Justice Department inspector general said on Monday that the DOJ kicked off a probe into former director of FBI James Comey’s alleged leak of memos which detail some of his meetings with President Donald Trump in 2017, Newsweek reported.

The report on Comey was written by Michael Horowitz, who slammed the former FBI director’s manner of handling the private probe of Hilary Clinton’s emails, addressed Senate Intelligence Committee members saying that he had been delivered a referral of the FBI to investigate the leak.

Comey admitted to the very same committee last year that he intentionally leaked one of his memos to an intermediary, who then relayed the information to The New York Times. In May of last year, and exactly a week after Trump fired Comey, the Times published a story citing Comey’s memo, which claimed Trump had asked him to “let this go” in reference to the FBI’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Comey asserted that he believed Trump was attempting to obstruct the FBI’s investigation of Flynn, and that the President’s apparent request was an example of highly improper contact between an FBI director and a president.

Following Comey’s dismissal—which Trump claimed was over the handling of the Clinton investigation—and his testimony before Congress, the President labeled Comey a “leaker” while calling for an investigation by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the rest of the justice department.

“James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the terrible job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. He leaked CLASSIFIED information, for which he should be prosecuted. He lied to Congress under OATH…” Trump tweeted April 13.

Three days after he fired Comey, Trump alluded to “tapes” that could have proven the longtime federal prosecutor and investigator wrong. No such proof has yet to be released by the President or anyone else.

“James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” the President tweeted on May 12, 2017.
