Woman Whose Prison Sentence Was Commuted by Trump Thanks Him

Alice Marie Johnson, the woman who had her prison sentence commuted by President Donald Trump, on Thursday morning expressed gratitude to him for giving her “a second chance in life.”

“Thank you, President Trump for really seeing me, not just looking at some data about my crime, but actually looking at the person who I have become now and having faith that I deserved a second chance in life,” Johnson said on CNN‘s “New Day,” adding that he also made it possible for her to have a wonderful life.

Johnson, 63, a first-time nonviolent drug offender, was convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine, the nonprofit Can-Do said. She had already served 21 years in prison before being released on Wednesday.

Johnson’s sentence was commuted a week after reality star Kim Kardashian West lobbied for the move during an Oval Office meeting with the President. Trump tweeted early Thursday, wishing Johnson luck and telling her to “have a wonderful life.”

Johnson, who was ecstatic at the tweet, responded by saying “I’m so just amazed to hear that I’m actually one of his tweets. I love it!”

The development comes shortly after President Trump pardoned conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza, who had pleaded guilty to campaign finance charges. Trump also said he was considering a pardon for lifestyle guru Martha Stewart and a commutation for disgraced former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

The President has also said he has the legal power to pardon himself should special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation continues to swirl around his presidency.
