Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said that President Donald Trump is “brave and mature” for setting up a denuclearization summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
According to Reuters, Putin also told China Media Group that he is expecting a “positive outcome” from the upcoming June 12 meeting, which is set to take place in Singapore.
“I still hope that this meeting – a very brave and mature decision U.S. President Donald Trump has made, to have direct contacts with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un – will take place, and we all expect a positive outcome,” he said.
The interview comes just one day after Moscow extended an invitation to Kim to visit Russia. A Kremlin spokesperson on Tuesday stated that the meeting is planned to be part of an economic forum held in the eastern city of Vladivostok in September.
The Wall Street Journal on Friday wrote that the White House was making the necessary preparations for a potential meeting with the Russian president, which would mark the third meeting between the two leaders. Putin told Austrian news outlet ORF TV on Tuesday that he and Trump talk on the phone regularly.
“Indeed, Donald Trump and I have, firstly, met more than once at various international venues and secondly, we regularly talk over the phone,” the Russian leader said.
Meanwhile, China on Wednesday responded to U.S. bombers flying over the South China Sea, saying Beijing will not be intimidated by military aircraft in the region.
“Running amuck is risky,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters. “China won’t be scared by any so-called military ship or aircraft, and we will only even more staunchly [take] all necessary steps to defend the country’s sovereignty and security, to protect the peace and stability of the South China Sea region,” she continued, according to the news service.
