President Donald Trump again took to Twitter on Wednesday, expressing his lamentation at the decision to pick Jeff Session as attorney general.
Trump wrote that he wished he had chosen someone else instead of Sessions, whose recusal from the Russia investigation frustrated the President. The Wednesday tweet was another proof of Trump’s focus on the special counsel’s investigation, despite claiming he was diverting his attention to more pressing matters, like North Korea and trade only days before.
The President’s tweet was provoked by a New York Times report about a meeting between him and the attorney general in which Trump, allegedly, asked Sessions to reverse his decision to recuse himself from the probe. The newspaper also reported Mueller was looking into the episode, CNN writes.
The President’s tweet quoted South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy who said earlier that day that Trump could have chosen someone else for the job, reading, “…There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else! And I wish I did!”
Gowdy’s comments came in response to a question about whether President Trump may have obstructed justice in reportedly asking Sessions to reverse his decision to step away from the investigation. The Republican said that he believed Trump was frustrated because Sessions hadn’t shared his reasons for recusal before accepting the role of attorney general.
This was not the first time that Trump has lashed out at Sessions for the same reason, which eventually led to Robert Mueller being appointed special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Last July, Trump also said he would not have chosen Sessions for the post if he had known he would recuse himself. Nonetheless, people close to the president say he is unlikely to fire the attorney general.
