South Korean President Moon Jae-In apparently stated that U.S. President Donald Trump should be the one that receives the Nobel Peace Prize for his work brokering peace between North Korea and South Korea.
“President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. What we need is only peace,” Moon told other South Korean officials.
According to Reuters, the comment comes after Moon last week met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who for the first time crossed into South Korea.
Meanwhile, Trump is getting ready for a meeting with Kim in the coming weeks, though the White House has yet to announce a time or place.
South Korea said that Jong Un apparently stated that he would give up the nuclear weapons program if the United States vows not to invade.
Trump has praised the meeting between North and South Korea, saying “good things are happening.”
“After a furious year of missile launches and Nuclear testing, a historic meeting between North and South Korea is now taking place. Good things are happening, but only time will tell!” Trump wrote on Twitter Friday.
“KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!”
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that liberals “would kill themselves” if Trump won a Nobel Prize.
“President Trump, if he can lead us to ending the Korean War after 70 years and getting North Korea to give up their nuclear program in a verifiable way, deserves the Nobel Peace Prize and then some,” Graham told Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on Sunday.
“I want to be there. It may be the first time the Nobel Peace Prize was given and there was mass casualties because I think a lot of liberals would kill themselves if they did that,” he said.
“But the bottom line is, by any objective measure what President Trump has done is historic,” Graham added.
Graham has also previously called for Trump to win a Nobel Peace Prize if he’s able to get North Korea to denuclearize.
The crowd at a rally Trump held Saturday night in Michigan began chanting “Nobel, Nobel” when he mentioned planned talks with North Korea.
“That’s very nice, thank you. That’s very nice,” Trump responded to the chants.
