A South Korean delegation visiting North Korea said that the North’s leader Kim Jong-un promised that they will stop testing nuclear missiles only if the United States hold talks with Pyongyang,
The Associated Press reported that an official in South Korea’s presidential office said that North Korean officials are ready for “heart-to-heart” discussions with the U.S. North Korea is reportedly ready to discuss denuclearization and normalizing relations with Washington.
The South Korean official also added that North Korea is prepared to give up its nuclear weapons if threats of military action stop, and if North Korea’s security is guaranteed. Kim Jong-un also promised that he is not going to use any weapons against South Korea.
South Korean envoys on Monday traveled to North Korea in a historic meeting with country leader Kim Jong-un.
The South Korean delegation also added that Kim said during the dinner with the envoys that he has a “firm will to vigorously advance the north-south relations and write a new history of national reunification by the concerted efforts of our nation to be proud of in the world.”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump responded to a report of the meeting between Kim and the South Korean envoys with a five-word tweet: “We will see what happens!”
Later, Trump tweeted that the whole world is watching as progress is made by all sides.
“Possible progress being made in talks with North Korea. For the first time in many years, a serious effort is being made by all parties concerned. The World is watching and waiting! May be false hope, but the U.S. is ready to go hard in either direction!”
The advance in relations between the two Korean nations improved as a result of North Korea sending athletes to compete in the Winter Olympics in South Korea last month.
Previously, President Trump exchanged a number of threats with North Korea leader over its nuclear missiles tests, saying last year that the country would be “met with fire and fury” if it threatened the U.S. North Korea has continued with their nuclear testing since then.
According to The Associated Press, the South Korean envoys are set to travel to the U.S. and brief American officials about the talks with North Korea.
