One of the top officials at the National Rifle Association (NRA) had an Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence after which he said that the pair “don’t want gun control,” The Hill reports.
Later, the NRA-ILA executive director Chris Cox defended President Trump in a Twitter post, saying that he supports a “strong due process,” which ironically comes just a day after the president surprised all gun rights advocates with a statement to “take the guns first, go through due process second.”
“I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control,” Cox tweeted Thursday night.
Meanwhile, President Trump also mentioned the meeting on Twitter, calling it a “good (great)” meeting but did not share any details of what was discussed.
The Hill reported Wednesday that the president stunned Democratic and Republican lawmakers during a meeting at the White House when he endorsed a Democratic “wish list” of gun control proposals, including raising the age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21 and confiscating guns from individuals deemed dangerous without following due process.
Trump, during the meeting, bashed at Republican Senator Pat Toomey saying that he is “afraid” of the NRA while using the situation to praise his own independence from the organization.
As a result of the school shooting in Parkland Florida, the NRA and its lobbying arm have been under fire for holding many politicians in their pockets and not letting tougher gun control policies to be applied.
The Florida shooting was carried out by the 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz who legally purchased an AR-15 automatic rifle with which he killed 17 people and wounded more than a dozen.
Democrats are pushing for a ban on automatic assault rifles arguing that they are not for sport or hunting but invented for killing.
