Based on results from a new poll, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer came to his lowest approval point among New York voters.
According to Quinnipiac University Poll, 53 percent of voters approve of the job the minority leader is doing in the Senate, while 35 percent do not approve.
Since 1999, when Schumer was first elected to the Senate, this is the lowest approval the New York Democrat has received. In April that same year, 51 percent of voters approved of the job he was doing at the time against the 22 percent that didn’t approve.
“Proof perhaps that even one the most popular of Senators can get muddied up in today’s Washington swamp,” Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University Poll assistant director said in a statement.
“Senator Chuck Schumer gets the worst approval rating he’s seen in nearly 20 years.”
The poll scores are a result of both parties’ attempts to blame each other for two government shutdowns in a month’s time.
The Hill reports that as lawmakers struggle to reach a deal over immigration, including a legislative fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which shields young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children from deportation, the ratings of all those that are part of that process are dropping.
Schumer was elected to his fourth term in the Senate in 2011.
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator for New York Kirsten Gillibrand is jockeying for potential White House runs. She had an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” that aired on Sunday, where her comments made her one of the “most prominent political faces of the #MeToo movement.”
She used the interview to publicly rebuke former President Bill Clinton and ex-Senator Al Franken, which has stirred some ill will among Senate Democrats. Her inclination to call out fellow Democrats made her quite controversial within the Washington power establishment, which could be a positive asset on a presidential campaign.
