According to the White House daily schedule, a “National Vetting Center” will be established on Tuesday by President Donald Trump in order for him to improve the vetting process of individuals coming to the United States.
CNN reported Monday that President Trump is planning to sign a national security memorandum that will give the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and several other government agencies a deadline of six months in which they will have to establish the vetting center.
Two officials from Trump’s administration told the news outlet that the vetting center goal would be to improve how different federal agencies share their information about vetting, as well as streamline the process. However, it was not described how the center will change the way on how immigrants and travelers who come to the U.S. will be vetted.
The vetting center is going to be a coordinated effort between the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, the State Department, and several other intelligence agencies.
A National Security Council official also told CNN that the presidential directive will not call for any new funding.
While the center’s efforts are largely expected to focus on visa applicants, immigrants and others looking to enter the U.S., the center will also look to streamline vetting of certain individuals who are already in the U.S., including those subject to deportation proceedings, according to the National Security Council official.
The memorandum will also include a provision to establish an independent panel within the period of six months which will be providing oversight on privacy and civil liberties issues for the center.
It is expected that the independent panel will be overseen by a board of governors which will include Cabinet members.
Since the beginning of his presidential campaign, Trump has repeatedly called for more “extreme vetting” of all those entering the United States. One of his most controversial and challenged policies regarding this issue is the travel ban he applied to Muslim countries which the Supreme Court has agreed to review.
