Javad Zarif, the foreign minister of Iran, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his remarks made during his first State of the Union address. According to Zarif, Trump’s remarks showed his ignorance, The Hill reports.
“Trump again confirms his ignorance of Iran and region. Everyone knows where he stands, and it’s certainly not with Iranians. His ‘virtuous’, ‘democratically- elected’ clients in our region may cheer, but not those on receiving end of their tyranny and weapons, including Yemeni children,” Zarif wrote on Twitter.
Previously, Trump referred to Iran and North Korea as rogue regimes. While speaking on Capitol Hill, Trump emphasized that his country supports the people of Iran in their courageous struggle for freedom. According to Trump, it is now time for change in Iran. The president praised the protesters for acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime.
“When the people of Iran rose up against the crimes of their corrupt dictatorship, I did not stay silent. America stands with the people of Iran in their courageous struggle for freedom,” Trump said Tuesday.
This is not the first time Trump expresses support for the protesters. He did the same thing earlier this month when he tweeted that the people of Iran “will see great support from the United States at the appropriate time!”
More than 3,700 people were arrested and more than 20 died in two weeks of nationwide protests in Iran. The protests began on December 28 in response to an austerity budget proposed by President Hasan Rouhani.
Trump used the opportunity to reiterate his opposition to the nuclear deal, according to CNN.
“I am asking the Congress to address the fundamental flaws in the terrible Iran nuclear deal,” the president said.
Trump has persistently criticized the nuclear deal put in place by his predecessor Barack Obama and has labeled Iran a state sponsor of terror. Trump has also included the citizens of Iran in his controversial travel ban.
