The Department of Justice (DOJ) allegedly provided documents to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, concerning Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s proposed resignation last year, The Hill informs. The documents were handed over before Mueller interviewed Sessions regarding the Russia investigation.
According to ABC News, the Justice Department gave Mueller internal correspondence related to the proposed resignation, while the agency also handed over emails with the White House regarding former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.
Mueller was allegedly seeking information related to the firing last year of former FBI director James Comey and Sessions’s decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe.
Comey was fired in May of last of year, and days later Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as Special Counsel. In a meeting after Mueller was appointed, Trump told Sessions he should resign, prompting the Attorney General to submit a letter of resignation, The New York Times informs. However, Trump ultimately rejected the resignation after advisers warned against it in the wake of Comey’s firing.
Trump allegedly also wanted to have White House aides fire Mueller, but backed off the idea after one of his White House counsels, Don McGahn, as well as several others made clear they were opposed to such a move, a source told ABC News.
Mueller’s team is currently investigating Russian election interference and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. President Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed the investigation as a witch hunt, denying any type of collusion.
Trump’s lawyers are also arguing that Mueller’s team hasn’t met the high bar they believe is necessary to interview the president. Mueller has provided Trump’s lawyers with a number of topics investigators want to discuss with the president, making it clear that he is seeking an interview with Trump, CNN adds.
