Tillerson Says Trump Delays UK Visit so Theresa May Can Focus on Brexit

On Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson commented on President Donald Trump’s delayed trip to the United Kingdom saying that the reason for it is that for the time the President avoids distracting Prime Minister Theresa May from negotiating Britain’s exit from the European Union

“As you know, President Trump was supportive of the UK’s exit from the EU, he still thinks that was the right decision for them,” Tillerson said to the Bloomberg reporters.

“Britain needs to focus on those Brexit negotiations right now, which is really important to them, and I think the president realizes that’s where Prime Minister May really needs to focus her attention,” the Secretary of State added.

Last week, Trump said in a tweet that the trip to London to open the new U.S. embassy there was canceled because he does not agree with the building’s high cost and location, blaming the Obama administration for making a bad deal. The moving of the embassy was former President George W. Bush era project.

Meanwhile, Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London who is not very fond of Trump’s conservative politics, has embraced the news that President Trump canceled the visit to London regarding the official opening of the new U.S. embassy.

According to The Hill, a possible visit to the UK by Trump has been a subject of controversy since last year, when he was invited for a state visit.

In early 2016, more than a million people signed an official UK petition to forbid Trump to visit the country, and some members of Parliament have called to ban Trump from the country.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday announced that he is going to visit London next week hoping he will find the time to visit the new embassy there.
