Roy Moore’s campaign appealed to President Donald Trump’s supporters on Sunday, claiming a vote for the Republican Senate candidate would be a vote for Trump.
Only days before Tuesday’s special election, polls indicate a tight race between Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, a former U.S. attorney, who has been cast by Moore’s chief political strategist as someone who would vote against the president’s priorities such as cutting taxes and erecting a wall on the border with Mexico.
“If the people of Alabama vote for this liberal Democrat Doug Jones, they’re voting against the president who they put in office at the highest level,” the strategist, Dean Young, said, adding that “if they can beat him, they can beat his agenda, because Judge Moore stands with Donald Trump and his agenda.”
Moore, whom several women have accused of sexual harassment, has been repeatedly attacked by Jones who maintains Moore is not a suitable choice. Moore will most likely face an immediate investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee should he be elected, Republican leaders have said.
The attempt by the Moore campaign to align itself with the president raises the stakes for him in the Alabama race. Trump has praised and endorsed Moore on several occasions, despite a number of Republicans calling on him to distance himself from Moore.
Alabama Senator Richard Shelby said on Sunday his state can “do better” that Moore, suggesting a write-in candidate is a better option.
“I couldn’t vote for Roy Moore. I didn’t vote for Roy Moore. But I wrote in a distinguished Republican name. And I think a lot of people could do that,” Shelby said.
“The state of Alabama deserves better,” he added.
