Michael Flynn’s allies have donated to a legal defense fund that his family set up several months ago, Newsweek reports. Joseph Flynn and Barbara Redgate, who are Flynn’s siblings, established the Michael T. Flynn Legal Defense Fund in September and a link to the fund appears on Flynn’s Twitter profile. The family members have also tweeted the link.
“The costs of legal representation associated with responding to the multiple investigations that have arisen in the wake of the 2016 election place a great burden on Mike and his family. They are deeply grateful for considering a donation to help pay expenses relating to his legal representation,” the website for the fund says and adds that it will accept only donations from United States citizens and permanent residents.
According to the site, all the money will go toward attorneys’ fees and other costs related to legal representation. The family of Flynn said that it has received an outpouring of support.
“General Flynn and Our Family Are Very Grateful For Your Incredible Outpouring Of Love, Kind Words, And Support This Weekend. Thank You All!” Redgate tweeted.
Previously, Jack Flynn retweeted a claim that Michael faces more than one million dollars in legal bills and Joseph Flynn wrote, “we woke up to a huge outpouring of love and support” for the fund and thanked all of their friends.
Many people have tweeted #IStandWithFlynn in recent days and at least one person established his own effort to raise money for the former national security adviser. A person named Dylan Wallner of Dickinson, North Dakota launched a campaign after the Mueller charge through the website GoFundMe and has so far raised 100 dollars from three donors.
Flynn pleaded guilty to lying about conversations he had last year with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. at that time. The office of special counsel Robert Mueller announced a charge against him as part of the investigation into the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign.
