The Republican National Committee is resuming its support for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore after President Donald Trump endorsed the controversial hopeful.
“We can confirm our involvement in the Alabama Senate race,” a committee official told The Hill.
Breitbart was the first to report the story and a second unnamed source close to the RNC confirmed for The Hill that the story was real. The decision comes after the president expressed his support for Moore on Twitter.
“Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama,” he wrote. “We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro-Life, V.A. Judges 2ndAmendment and more,” he tweeted.
Trump also called Democrat candidate Doug Jones “a Pelosi/Schumer puppet.” His endorsement was followed by a phone call from Air Force One. CNN reported that Trump called the candidate a fighter and ended the conversation by saying “Go get’em, Roy!”
Last month RNC and the National Republican Senatorial Committee announced that they would not support Moore even after the president stood by him, The Hill reports and reminds that the two groups cut ties with Moore in October and halted their financial and field support. Several Republican lawmakers called Moore to step aside, but he did not even after a handful of women accused him of sexual harassment.
Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney tweeted that “Moore in the U.S. Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation.” Meanwhile, GOP Senator Orrin Hatch defended Trump’s decision to support Moore and said that the allegations were from decades ago.
“I don’t think he had a choice but to do that,” Hatch said, referring to Trump’s decision.
