Senator Chris Murphy together with two other Democratic senators are planing to introduce a bill barring President Donald Trump from launching a preemptive strike on North Korea without congressional consent. According to Murphy, the aim of the bill is to prevent Trump from carrying out a nuclear or conventional strike unless Congress first approves.
“Trump’s North Korea threats are real. I will intro bill w brianschatz & CoryBooker to prohibit any preemptive action w/o vote by Congress,” Murphy tweeted.
He was referring to Senators Brian Schatz and Cory Booker.Murphy warned that such a strike could kill hundreds of thousands of people on Korean Peninsula and asked for support from the Republican lawmakers.
“Mistake by Trump could kill hundreds of thousands on Korean Peninsula. My bill w brianschatz, CoryBooker will clarify Trump’s war powers. For all the Republicans breaking w Trump, here is your chance to actually constrain his most dangerous power – to make war,” Murphy wrote on Twitter.
Trump has engaged in an ongoing war of words with North Korea, and has repeatedly threatened military action against the country if it continues to pursue its nuclear ambitions and threats against the U.S. and its allies in the region, The Hill reminds.
Last month Trump warned that he would totally destroy North Korea if it continued with its threats. Next month he will travel to China and he is expected to press President Xi Jinping to step up pressure on Pyongyang to curb its weapons programs. China is North Korea’s sole major ally and accounts for more than 90 percent of trade with the isolated country.
China has said it will strictly enforce UN Security Council sanctions banning imports of coal, textiles and seafood, while cutting off oil shipments to the North, Reuters reported.
