Ivanka Trump has managed to secure the inclusion of a child tax credit in the Republican proposal for tax overhaul. Her next step is to make sure the child tax credit expansion remains in the tax plan, after which she would have to ensure the overall tax plan crosses the finish line. However for the time being, that is highly unlikely to happen.
In a statement she issued, Trump said “A significant expansion of the Child Tax Credit will help parents have more money at a time in their lives when they need it the most and give them the flexibility to make the best choices regarding their families’ care.”
Ivanka Trump has been working on obtaining other Republican lawmakers’ support, after having obtained it from Senators Marco Rubio and Mike Lee, whose 2015 proposal has been partially adopted by Trump. She is soon expected to argue her case publicly as part of a coordinated White House push for tax overhaul.
Some critics of Trump argue that she is only talking about pro-family policies without actually making any considerable progress on these issues from inside the White House. She has also been attacked by the Center for American Progress concerning her advocacy of women and family-related issues.
Neera Tanden, president of the center, said “this administration is one of the most regressive on women’s issues,” adding that if Ivanka Trump is ”the leading voice, then she is a voice of policies that hurt women.”
The child tax credit was first enacted in 1997 by President Bill Clinton, and was further expanded by President George W. Bush four years later, by providing families with non-refundable $1000 a year for minors under the age of 17.
