Poll: Majority Favors Compromise among Political Leaders

A new poll shows that the majority of U.S. citizens stand behind their political leaders in Washington in making compromises to achieve their goals, The Hill reports.

A Gallup survey listed 54 percent of Americans who believe that political leaders should compromise. Just 18 percent of the respondents think it’s more important for political leaders to stay firm on their positions, even if it means they can’t get things done. Forty-four percent of Republicans think that leaders in Washington should make compromises to get things done and 62 percent of Democrats favor compromise.

Just 23 percent of the Republicans and 12 percent of the Democrats believe it’s more important that leaders in Washington stay firm on their positions.

The poll was conducted from September 6 to 10 among 1,022 adults. The margin of error is 4 percent. Since President Trump took office, he has struggled to pass some key agenda proposals, including the repeal and replace of ObamaCare. This past weekend, he tweeted he had called Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer “to see if the Dems want to do a great HealthCareBill.” Trump has also opposed his party in the past.

In early September, Trump sided with Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi over GOP leaders on a short-term bill to fund the government, raise the debt ceiling for three months and provide hurricane and disaster recovery aid.
