A women’s reproductive health clinic in Texas is offering free abortions for those affected by Hurricane Harvey, and at least 74 women have signed up so far, The Dallas Morning News reported.
Austin-based Whole Woman’s Health has raised $15,000 toward a goal of $40,000 to pay the costs of travel and abortion services for any woman who wants a free one, the Morning News reported.
“Many of these women are traveling for two days and need support for travel and child care,” Whole Woman’s Health CEO Amy Hagstrom Miller told the Morning News.
“I know this in general for women needing abortion services — an unplanned pregnancy usually provides multiple layers of challenges in life. A natural disaster only compounds that,” Miller said.
The organization repeated the offer it made after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike, the Morning News reported.
Whole Woman’s Health, with clinics in Fort Worth, San Antonio, McAllen as well as its home base of Austin, is keeping the offer open through the end of the month, it said on its website.
“There is always a cost to abortion,” Texas Right to Life Director Melissa Conway told the Morning News in a written statement.
“Women are not free from the emotional toll that ensues after abortion, and the child is certainly not free to live another day. Abortions, just like the catastrophic effects of a hurricane, are never free and we, as a community, pay the price for their needless destruction,” she told the Morning News.
