President Donald Trump has announced his plan to request an initial $5.95 billion in relief following Hurricane Harvey, The Hill reported Friday.
The president said that he was planning on attaching the emergency relief request to a measure, thus raising the United States’ debt, Bloomberg reported, citing two administration officials. This request has been reported to come as early as Friday and would be allocated to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the rest will be transferred to the Small Business Administration.
Mick Mulvaney, White House budget chief has urged lawmakers on Capitol Hill to support the funding, Axios reported.
The administration believes the funding would cover the hurricane recovery demands through the end of the fiscal year Sept. 30, Bloomberg reported. The move is reportedly aimed at easing early passage of the measure to increase the debt limit and avoid a congressional standoff.
Some lawmakers, including the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, have called for Harvey relief aid to not be used as the vehicle for raising the debt ceiling, The Hill has reported.
