Large pockets of land remained under water, one week after Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas shore, one of the costliest and worst natural disasters that ever hit the United United States, Reuters reported.
The hurricane has resulted in over a million displaced people, and around 44 dead from the floods that paralyzed Houston. River levels have swelled to record highs, and water supply in Beaumont has been knocked out.
Public health officials have given out warning of the risk of fire and explosions at chemical plants, after a blast rocked the Arkema SA facility on Thursday, some 25 miles east of Houston, which was engulfed by water. The Neches River, which flows into Beaumont and nearby Port Arthur, was forecast to a record crest from Friday well above flood levels. The flooding and loss of drinking water forced the evacuation of a hospital on Thursday.
“Beaumont is basically an island,” Mayor Becky Adams told a news conference on Thursday.
Located some 80 miles east of Houston, Beaumont was only able to receive one large drinking water supply Thursday, after which plans we made to set up water supply centers in the city, officials said Friday.
