Representative Adam Schiff said Saturday that President Donald Trump’s pardon of former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio could reverberate in the Russia investigation, Politico reports.
The ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee wrote on Twitter that Trump-aligned witnesses might be inclined to not cooperate with investigators, since the president has shown his willingness to pardon allies.
“Arapio action was appalling & political. It also sends a message to the witnesses in the Russia investigation to keep quiet, stay loyal & get pardon,” Schiff tweeted on Saturday afternoon.
Schiff first hit Trump on Twitter just after the White House announced Arpaio’s pardon on Friday night. “@POTUS just pardoned Arpaio, convicted of contempt for discriminatory police practices. That’s not ‘public service,’ or any service at all,” he posted.
Schiff has been vocal about his suspicion of wrongdoing in the Trump camp, taking to cable news and talk shows over the course of the investigation.
Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, testified before Schiff’s panel last month about a June 2016 meeting that included Trump campaign aides and Russian officials. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., and former campaign manager Paul Manafort also agreed to turn over documents to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
