Spotify Launches AI-Powered ‘DJ’

Spotify’s new AI-powered DJ will build you a custom playlist and talk over the top of it. The music streaming app’s latest feature uses a synthesized voice to provide a personalized radio listening experience.

Spotify describes it as an “AI DJ in your pocket” that “knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you.” The music service is diving further into the ever-emerging artificial technology space.

The music streaming service is no stranger to artificial intelligence—Spotify uses AI to feed you customized playlists like Daily Mixes, Decade Mixes, and Mood Mixes.

In a launch trailer and clips shared on social media, the feature seems to rather accurately mimic a radio station presenter.

It comes on the heels of other buzzy products like Microsoft’s ChatGPT-driven Bing.

DJ has been rolled out in the beta form. The mixes, coming alongside Spotify’s wheelhouse of custom playlist offerings, revisit users’ old favorites and current hits and introduce new bops based on data.

DJ offers commentary every few songs or if “called upon via the ‘DJ’ button.”

The playlist is endless, but users can apparently switch genres or artists by hitting the on-screen DJ button.

Based on this feedback, the feature should improve on what tunes it recommends to you — scanning fresh releases to suggest new artists you might like, or taking you back to older tracks you previously enjoyed.

Experts say that what does seem impressive is the quality of the artificial voice. It’s a realistic voice modeled after Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships.

But critics say Spotify’s new AI DJ is deeply unnecessary and mimics the worst parts of the radio.

DJ is basically a humanization of Spotify’s already existing AI-generated playlists—which also recommend songs you might like and revisit your past listening habits—except now the tool has a fun voice.
