US Embassy in London Back to Business After Security Scare

After a security alert caused by a suspicious package outside the building on Wednesday, the US embassy in London is now resuming normal operations, the embassy’s official Twitter account said.

In the post, the Embassy expressed its gratitude to UK’s Metropolitan Police for its swift action and to all visitors for their cooperation and patience, noting that local authorities have investigated and cleared a suspicious package outside the Embassy.

On Wednesday morning, the US embassy in London was briefly put into a state of lockdown with staff and visitors inside told to duck and move away from windows after a report of a suspicious item that had been left in the vicinity.

People that were waiting in a queue at the facility were reportedly asked to remain in a specific area away from the threat.

Videos and photos shared on the Internet showed armed police making inquiries inside the building and patrolling the area, along with sniffer dogs, outside while people inside the building – including parents with babies and young children – were crouching or sitting restless on the ground away from windows.

There were at least two fire engines and police vehicles in the area surrounding the embassy in Nine Elms, which was cordoned off as the photos from the scene show.

As the Metropolitan Police said later, the incident has been resolved after it turned out to be a false alarm.
