Pence Documents Put House Oversight Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Classified documents have been discovered at former Vice President Mike Pence’s Indiana home. The latest trove of classified documents is forcing the House Oversight Committee to choose between less than ideal options.

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) can either investigate a fellow Republican with the same vigor that he’s probing President Biden for classified documents, or downplay what could be a similar situation with Pence.

Comer is between a rock and a hard place, as he is trying to ensure that his committee maintains its credibility. Especially after it recently added far-right members like Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Scott Perry (R-Pa.)

Comer admitted in an interview on Friday, before the revelation of classified documents at Pence’s home, that the committee has earned a less-than-credible reputation, which he says he wants to amend.

Comer has strongly reprimanded Biden after the first batch of documents was found at the Penn Biden Center. He demanded the Department of Justice and the National Archives treat Biden with the same scrutiny as former President Donald Trump.

Advisers to Trump and President Biden jumped on news of classified documents being found in Pence’s Indiana home, with both viewing it as a helpful defense in their own documents investigations.

While the circumstances are different in each case, members of Trump’s legal team believe these developments will make it harder for prosecutors to justify bringing criminal charges against any of them. Earlier this month, Comer said he would not be investigating Trump over his handling of the classified documents.

Trump ran to Pence’s defense via his social media platform Truth Social, writing: “Mike Pence is an innocent man. He never did anything knowingly dishonest in his life. Leave him alone!!!”

Trump has not defended his veep in a while, especially after the two had a massive falling out over the Jan. 6 insurrection on the Capitol.

Meanwhile, Biden officials were relieved by the news, as the Pence news “turns down the temperature on this being a Biden-only story.”
