In a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that upheld the right to an abortion until it was reversed last year, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris said abortion rights are being attacked across the country, Reuters reported.
“The right of every woman in every state in the country to make decisions about her own body is on the line,” Harris said. “Republicans in Congress are now calling for an abortion ban at the moment of conception nationwide. How dare they?”
Over 26 million women presently reside in states that have outlawed abortion, according to White House officials who stated last week that 60 anti-abortion legislation had been filed in the 2023 legislative session.
In a speech given in Tallahassee, Florida, Harris also spoke in favor of enacting laws at the federal level to defend reproductive rights. Even though they had control of both chambers of Congress last year, Democrats were unable to enact. Republicans, who now have a slender House of Representatives majority, are unlikely to embrace the measure.
After some state authorities tried to make it illegal for women to have medication abortions, Biden issued a proclamation on Sunday to safeguard access to the procedure.
This month, the Food and Drug Administration announced that abortion drugs will be made more readily available at pharmacies and via mail. Abortion opponents are suing to overturn the medications’ clearance, and a legal fight has begun in a federal court in Texas.
According to White House officials, Harris was inspired to give a speech in Florida by the state’s decision to outlaw abortions last year, with no exceptions for rape or incest.
Possibly running for president in 2024 is the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis.
Republicans’ underwhelming showing in the 2018 midterm elections is blamed by Democrats and some Republicans on worries over the loss of abortion rights. The 2024 elections, in which the White House and both houses of Congress will be up for grabs, are seen as an opportunity for Biden’s party to gain ground on the subject of abortion.
