Mayors are looking at banning gas stoves or leaf blowers, as well as other so-called controversial steps like replacing gas-guzzling city vehicles with electric alternatives and supporting solar power.
But they fear the moves would be political poison.
The brutal realities of the election cycle prompt many officials to gravitate toward policies that will not alienate broad swaths of voters.
It means that politicians are being held hostage by political discourse, and it is happening in the face of extreme weather and climate risks that threaten their cities and constituents.
The results were published in the 2022 Menino Survey of Mayors, a nationally representative survey of U.S. mayors.
Mayors are also speaking out against gunmakers in an effort to stop gun violence.
A group of mayors revealed the top gun manufacturers and other fresh data that they’ve collected over a five-year period at the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting in D.C.
In 2021 alone, four manufacturers accounted for over half of the recovered guns used in crimes across 31 cities, according to a new Everytown for Gun Safety analysis.
Glock, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, and Ruger were the top four manufacturers named in the report.
“Mayors are on the frontlines of our nation’s gun violence epidemic and that’s why we won’t shy away from naming those who make the guns that are killing our communities,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City, Missouri, who is a co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition of mayors working with Everytown to end gun violence.
